Who is CAL?
Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) provides simple ways for people to reproduce, store and share words, images and other creative content, in return for fair payment. In doing so, it connects the creators, owners and users of copyright material. CAL represents authors, journalists, visual artists, surveyors, photographers and newspaper, magazine and book publishers as their non-exclusive agent to license the copying of their works to the general community.
We manage an important part of copyright for creators and publishers: the right to reproduce their works. As a not-for-profit, member-based company we have distributed over $780 million since 1989 and now represent the reproduction and communication rights of thousands of Australian authors, journalists, visual artists, surveyors, photographers and publishers. CAL provides a legal and practical method for the public, business and government to copy published works. As a single resource, CAL can provide copyright clearances for hundreds of thousands of books, articles, essays and artwork through our licences to copy or through our online permissions service Copyright Express.
CAL administers the copying of print material by educational institutions, government agencies, corporations, associations, religious organisations and other organisations. We are committed to encouraging the development of lively and diverse markets for published works with our range of commercial and non-commercial copying licences. As the basis of international commerce shifts to ideas and information, CAL continues to look for new solutions that provide both fair payment to copyright owners and community access to information.
CAL also publishes a range of free information sheets, a free quarterly magazine Calendar, and reports about copyright issues. Our corporate publications are all available online, as well as associated documents such as the Code of Conduct for Copyright Collecting Societies.

CAL has developed a Complaints Handling procedure to ensure that complaints are handled in a clearly defined and effective manner. For more information, download the Complaints Handling Procedure information sheet.
