Licences for press clipping agencies
CAL acts as an agent for Copyco, who represent the main newspaper and magazine publishers in Australia. On this basis, and on the mandate from our members, CAL can offer licences to press clipping agencies for the activity of ‘clipping’ and supplying clips to their clients.
CAL has three types of licence available:
- the Photocopying Licence allows press clipping services to photocopy and distribute clips;
- the Scan to Fax Licence allows articles to be scanned and distributed (hardcopy or fax) to clients; and
- the Copying and Communication Licence allows press-clipping services to scan articles and to also distribute them to clients digitally.
The format in which the press clipping agency intends to supply clips to clients will determine which licence they will need. Some may need all three depending on client needs.
As part of the licence agreement, press clipping agencies will need to provide full data records to CAL on a quarterly basis. This will include the details of the clips provided for example, the publication, article heading, author etc. and the details of the copyright fees collected. CAL then uses this information to pay the copyright owners for the use of their clips.
