CAL’s Resale Royalty Team

The resale royalty scheme for visual artists commenced operation on 9 June 2010. Since being appointed by the government to manage the scheme, CAL has appointed specialist staff members to assist artists and art market professionals in the day-to-day operation of the scheme.

Judy Grady was appointed Resale Royalty Manager in September 2010 and is here to assist art market professionals meet their obligations under the scheme. Dealers, galleries and auction houses are required to report resales of artworks to CAL and Judy is available to help them incorporate the reporting into their regular business practices. Judy says that so far ‘it is great to see so many of the galleries and auction houses being proactive and integrating the resale reporting with their current business systems.’

Tristan Chant also joined CAL in September 2010 and is our Visual Artist Manager. Tristan’s main role is to contact artists to make arrangements for the payments of their royalties. Although some artists live in remote areas across Australia, ‘we are successfully reaching artists through a variety of means, including through Indigenous art centres and agents’ says Tristan.

Our most recently recruit is Trish Adjei, who joined CAL at the end of January as our Indigenous Communications Coordinator. Trish, a Torres Strait Islander and Ghanaian woman, is a qualified lawyer and will be the key contact at CAL for the Indigenous community. She will also be contributing to our legal and policy procedure discussion, seeking to enhance the services we provide, especially to the Indigenous sector.
