CAL membership exceeds 18,000
CAL’s Member Services team have recruited 1860 new members since the end of the 2009/10 financial year, bringing membership numbers to 18,062 as of 31 January 2011. The increase represents nearly $2 million in funds for distribution amongst the new members.
Reaching this membership milestone reflects the fact that users of copyright material are increasingly copying or communicating new content. When this content appears in CAL usage surveys, we conduct research to identify who the rightsholders are so we can invite them to join CAL in order to receive payment for the use of their work.
CAL’s Member Services Manager, Rosanna Arciuli says the increase ‘demonstrates the hard work of our Member Services officers in locating non-members and explaining how CAL has collected the money that has been allocated to their work.’
Since 2006, CAL has achieved an average 22% increase in new members each consecutive year. Included in this most recent growth are more than 1,000 new author members, 361 journalists and 140 new visual artist members which is a 50% increase on this time last year. It is likely this increase in visual artist members can be attributed to CAL’s appointment of a dedicated Visual Arts Manager who has been able to focus on this membership sector.
