doi: the digital object identifier About DOI Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is trialling a new rights management application called Digital Object Identifier (DOI), for which CAL is the Registration Agency in Australia. Through projects like Classic Australian Works, CAL is exploring how DOI, as an enabling technology, might be used to support both authors and publishers direct markets. What is DOI? DOI is a system for identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment. DOI provides a framework for managing intellectual content, for linking customers with content suppliers, for facilitating electronic commerce, and enabling automated copyright management for all types of media. Using DOIs makes managing intellectual property in a networked environment easier and more convenient, and allows the construction of automated services and transactions for e-commerce. Where is it being used? DOI infrastructure is being increasingly adopted around the world. Governments and industry are adopting the system in the US, Europe, and Korea. China is currently evaluating the system and is likely to embrace the DOI Handle System. What does it mean for creators? DOI still uses the familiar principles of payment for use of copyright works. In time it will also enable everyone in the book production chain to adopt new practices that will help create the ‘knowledge economy’. Projects like Classic Australian Works give us the opportunity to provide access to our cultural heritage and to explore how DOI can work for creators.
