Ten years of funding and over three million dollars to celebrate

Copyright Agency Limited ( CAL ) is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its Cultural Fund which has already granted more than $3.4million in support of cultural projects and initiatives.

The total includes a record $750,000 allocated to projects and individual applicants in 2005/2006.

While many projects were high profile, such as support for the celebrated Miles Franklin Literary Award and sponsorship of the new Walkley Award for non-fiction books, the Fund has also supported many smaller projects - projects that have made a real difference in connecting people with literature, fostering creators' rights or helping them in their professional development.

In 2005/2006, $150,000 was allocated to a new Professional Development Fund which allocates grants to individuals wanting to develop their skills and expertise through attendance at conferences and professional workshops within Australia or overseas.

The deadline for the next round of applications for the Professional Development Fund is 25 August 2006, for projects occurring between 1 January and 30 June 2007.

CAL contributes up to one per cent of copyright revenue each year to its Cultural Fund and applications are welcomed from anyone in the Australian literary and artistic fields.

Other projects supported by the Cultural Fund include:

  • The Arts Law Centre of Australia's Artists in the Black program, educating remote Aboriginal artists about intellectual property;
  • The Centre for Youth Literature's interactive website www.insideadog.com.au encouraging teenagers to share their love of books and reading;
  • The NSW Awards for Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information;
  • Sponsorship and support of the Australian office of the writers' advocacy group PEN;
  • The new Calibre prize for essay writing with the Australian Book Review; and
  • Assisting Western Australian publishers to get specialised training available only in Sydney and Melbourne.
