Unconscious Insight by April White wins latest round of Copyright Agency's Artlike competition
Copyright Agency has announced Sydney based artist, April White, is the winner of the latest round of Artlike; an art appreciation initiative using social media.
Artlike is designed to help artists promote their works through social media, using Copyright Agency’s resale royalty Facebook page to display works from Australian visual artists. Artworks are submitted for posting on the page, and the winner is chosen by the amount of ‘likes’ received over a three-month period.
The third round of the Artlike competition closed on 31 May, attracting the most entries since being launched in 2011. April White’s Unconscious Insight proved to be the winning entry, and will now be featured in the July edition of Copyright Agency’s quarterly magazine, Calendar, which has an audience of nearly 20,000 Australia-wide.
Formerly from Canada, April’s love of art can be traced back to her childhood, where from an early age she sought to ‘express thoughts and ideas through images’. She studied Fine Art at York University, Toronto and developed into the artist she is today by refining her skills and absorbing as much as she could from travelling through North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
Now a Sydney resident, April works full time at Lennox Street Studios in Newtown and her work has been recognised in a number of awards across the country.
Unconscious Insight was part of a series of portraits she produced recently. View the artwork here.
‘The portraits are not representational of a particular person and include surreal elements to express mental states and emotions as deep layers of the human psyche are explored,’ she says.
‘There is a sense of Jungian dream symbolism in my portrait work, with recognisable objects or creatures placed in unrealistic ways. I draw on inspiration from my travels through Asia and Australia and from my own emotional journeys.’
April will be travelling back to Canada in August to take up an artist residency, which she hopes will help her portraiture to evolve by experimenting with different techniques. Her next show will be at Lennox Street Studios’ annual exhibition in November.
