Creators and creativity – two words bandied about freely and regularly at CAL, and for good reason. Without either, Australia’s cultural and educational landscape would be lacking a certain vibrancy that seems to be growing by the minute.

It’s a good thing too that creators of all walks – including authors, poets, playwrights, actors, artists and publishers, not to mention bloggers – are being recognised for the contribution they make to Australia. The creative stream at the Australia 2020 Summit in Canberra last April was testament to the growing value being placed on the collective voice of creativity.

Closer to home, it has been pleasing to see the recognition CAL members receive from others for their efforts. Case in point: Of this year’s Miles Franklin Literary Award shortlist, four of the five novels were penned by CAL members, and all five are published by CAL publisher members.

Recognising and rewarding creators and creativity is at the core of our work here at CAL. The fact that many of our members are also recognised by others as contributing significantly to the cultural and educational landscape is just one of the reasons why we are proud to continue our commitment to Australian creators and creativity.

We’d love to know your thoughts about Australia’s creative landscape. Is the collective voice being heard? What more can be done? Feel free to email us with your comments or questions on pr@copyright.com.au

Enjoy the read.

calendar issue 1 2008

Welcome to the first edition of Calendar for 2008. As we go to press CAL is almost through its Payments, Processes and Copyright Development seminar series. In eight locations around Australia, we always look forward to seeing our members, licensees, content creators and others interested in all matters relating to CAL and the continually evolving area of rights management.

Holding seminars throughout the year is just one of the ways we get to meet with you, our stakeholders, and find out which issues are high on your agenda. Understanding our stakeholders is essential to everything we do at CAL. It influences how we operate our business, how we develop new products and services and directs the advocacy and lobbying work we do on your behalf, both locally and internationally.

If you didn’t get the chance to attend our seminar series this time around, we’ll be holding another round later this year. Keep an eye on our website and in Calendar for details. In the meantime, do let us know about the issues and matters affecting you, and how you think CAL can help. You can drop us a line via the newsletter, send us an email pr@copyright.com.au to keep up-to-date with developments and learn more about what we do.

Happy reading!
