Convergence Review Draft Terms of Reference
On 14 December 2010, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Stephen Conroy released a draft Terms of Reference for a Convergence Review to be held in 2011.
What is ‘convergence’?
Over the past 15 years, there has been a range of technological developments in telecommunications, radio, television and the internet. Although historically these technologies have delivered content to us in distinctly different ways, they are now performing similar tasks and offering similar services.
This is known as ‘convergence’, and is to be the subject of a review conducted by the government in 2011. A committee of independent experts is to review the operation of media and communications regulation in Australia with the aim of bringing the current regulation up to date for the technologies of the convergent era.
The minister invites public consultation and comments on the draft Terms of Reference, which can be found on the Department of Broadband, Community and Digital Economy website along with a short background paper.
Contributions can be made up until 28 January 2011.
