Respect for Artists

May 5, 2015 | Copyright Advocacy

Michaela Boland’s article (“Olsen v Sotheby’s puts copyright in the dock’’, 28/4) suggests copyright is “in the dock”, when, in fact, what is beyond doubt is that Sotheby’s has breached the copyright of John Olsen.

Copyright is simple. You ask per-mission of the creator to reproduce their work and it is their right to refuse or grant permission.

Viscopy liaises with Sotheby’s and other auction houses to license its art-ists’ works. In this instance, Dr Olsen did not give permission. That does not mean Sotheby’s can simply go ahead anyway. What’s in the dock is respect for artists.
