Innovation to be recognised at forthcoming Cairns Arts Fair

July 20, 2017

The Copyright Agency has sponsored an Innovation Award for an artist worth $10,000 at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, held from 13-16 July.

The award is one of five being introduced at the Fair for the first time this year. CIAF’s Artistic Director, Janina Harding said the awards have been introduced to reflect the not-for-profit organisation’s commitment to supporting the professional development of Queensland’s talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

The Innovation Award will recognise an Indigenous artist creating innovative work. It will be presented Copyright Agency Board Member and visual artist Bronwyn Bancroft.

Copyright Agency CEO Adam Suckling said, “As an organisation with thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creator members, we are delighted to support an award that recognises the creation of art that is at the most cutting edge of artistic achievement.”

Another feature of the CIAF this year will be a panel discussion on copyright and how it affects Indigenous arts practitioners. It will feature Terri Janke (author and copyright, IP lawyer), Rhoda Roberts (arts producer, commentator and actress), Patrick Mau (musician and filmmaker) and Judy Watson (visual artist).

The discussion will be filmed by NITV and screened on 24 July at 9pm as a current affairs special.

Festival-goers can also stay up to date with the latest CIAF program information by downloading the 2017 version of CIAF’s event app or visiting www.ciaf.com.au
