Copyright Tribunal update: Appeal by Universities Australia filed

July 1, 2022

Universities Australia have applied for judicial review of the decision of the Copyright Tribunal on the rate payable by the 39 universities for use of copyright material. Although this is disappointing, together with our external legal team we will review the universities application and will keep you updated as the matter progresses. The universities are challenging almost all of the Tribunal’s decision and requesting that it is referred back to the Tribunal.

We will obviously fight this application and continue to uphold the right of our members to fair compensation for the use of their works.  I am confident that we will again prevail!

In the meantime, invoicing will occur at the new (higher) Tribunal rate but the escrow arrangements, including the funds currently held, will also continue until the matter is resolved.
