Non-profit company to certify AI developers that use licensed content

January 24, 2024

On 17 January 2024, a new non-profit company called Fairly Trained was launched in the US, offering certifications to AI developers that use licensed content and treat creators fairly.

Its founder and CEO is composer and technologist Ed Newton-Rex, who resigned from his role leading the Audio team at Stability AI because he disagreed with the company’s view that training generative AI models on copyrighted works is ‘fair use’ under US copyright law: see here.

Supporters of Fairly Trained include Association of American Publishers and Association of Independent Music Publishers.
