February 4, 2025
Did you see Copyright Agency member, Bobbi Lockyer’s visionary artwork adorning the 2025 Australian Open? Bobbi’s art was prominently featured on the steps to the entrance of Margaret Court Arena, and on a range of limited edition Australian Open merchandise.
As the official artist for the 2025 tournament, Bobbi was represented by Copyright Agency Visual Arts Licensing team, to ensure a fair and equitable licensing agreement was negotiated with Tennis Australia.
Each year, Tennis Australia works with a First Nations artist to help celebrate Australian First Nations culture and place it on a global stage through the Australian Open. Born and based on Kariyarra Country in Port Hedland, Bobbi Lockyer’s artwork displays a deep connection to her community, showcasing the colours and iconic landscapes of her homeland in the Pilbara region.
Of creating her artwork for the Australian Open, Bobbi said “the meaning of the artwork was of all the people coming together, a spirit of unity and inclusivity. My inspiration for this artwork came from the beautiful sunset that I witnessed when I flew into Melbourne for the Australian Open in 2024”.
Three large circles represent diverse communities coming together, while flowing river lines trace a shared journey of connection. Vibrant dots symbolise people from varied backgrounds, with bold brushstrokes of gum leaves—drawn from Aunty Joy’s Welcome to Country ceremony—inviting all to join the festivities. Gum blossoms and wattle florals add a touch of native beauty, reflecting growth, resilience, and the cultural richness that thrives when individuals come together to celebrate as one.
