July 9, 2025
A bold new chapter begins for Utopia Art Centre this September with the official opening of its stunning new facility — a state-of-the-art space that beautifully marries modern design with the contours and spirit of Anmatyerr Country.

The visionary structure, designed by Kaunitz Yeung Architecture, offers a purpose-built creative environment that marks a significant transformation for local artists. After years of working in makeshift sheds, they now thrive in bright, climate-controlled studios crafted specifically to support their practice and wellbeing.
Surrounded by landscaped gardens, visitors to the new Utopia Art Centre will be welcomed into an architecturally striking exhibition gallery, where they can experience the iconic work of Utopia’s renowned artists — including Motorbike Paddy Ngal — in a setting worthy of their cultural and artistic significance.

Utopia Art Centre has partnered with Copyright Agency to license artwork featured on custom-designed art screens at the new facility. The art centre has formally requested Copyright Agency to represent one of its artists — who is also a Copyright Agency member — in negotiating licensing terms.
This collaboration ensured that the licensing agreement was both fair and transparent, underpinned by a best practice model contract developed by Copyright Agency’s in-house legal team. It sets a new benchmark for how Indigenous artists and art centres can work with third parties while maintaining artistic control and equitable compensation.
With its world-class facilities and forward-thinking approach, Utopia Art Centre’s new home stands as a powerful symbol of cultural pride, creative excellence, and best practice collaboration in the Australian arts landscape.
