Licensing deal secured for NT surveying plans: Copyright royalties now available
August 14, 2025
Copyright Agency is pleased to announce a licensing agreement with the Northern Territory Government that secures copyright royalties for the creators of surveying plans used in the Territory.
The agreement covers a retrospective period and forward licensing from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2028. Through this agreement, more than $66,500 in copyright royalties will be made available to surveyors whose work has been used by or for the NT Government.
This agreement follows similar licensing deals already established in other Australian states and represents another important step in ensuring that copyright in surveying plans is properly recognised and remunerated.
Josephine Johnston, CEO of Copyright Agency, said the deal represents a significant milestone in supporting surveyors’ rights across Australia:
“Surveyors produce highly skilled, technical works that are relied upon every day in land development and public infrastructure. This agreement reinforces the principle that surveyors, like all creators, have a right to be paid when their work is used. Copyright helps ensure their contributions are respected and valued.”
Copyright royalties will be distributed to surveyors whose plans have been used, via Copyright Agency’s existing distribution processes. Surveying firms and surveyor sole traders who have not yet joined Copyright Agency should do so to ensure they receive royalty payments for plans identified as having been used.
