Remembering David Malouf

April 24, 2026

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Copyright Agency member, David Malouf AO, one of Australia’s most celebrated and influential writers, whose extraordinary body of work has shaped the nation’s literary landscape for more than half a century.

A novelist, poet, essayist and librettist, David’s writing combined lyrical precision with profound insight into identity, memory and place, much of which was garnered from his own childhood and family. David received numerous honours and accolades, reflecting both the breadth of his contribution and the enduring impact of his voice. His work resonated deeply with readers and writers alike.

During his long and distinguished career David received numerous honours and accolades. Remembering Babylon was published in 1993 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. His 1990 novel The Great World was awarded the prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award, recognising its outstanding portrayal of Australian life. His other best-known novels include the semi-autobiographical, JohnnoAn Imaginery Life, and Ransom.

Copyright Agency was privileged to work with David Malouf, including his role in officially launching Reading Australia in 2015 – an initiative dedicated to making great Australian literature accessible to educators and students, and to ensuring these stories continue to be read and taught for generations to come. An avid reader, David said at the time, “Learning to read and immersing yourself in books provides untold pleasures. I know from my own experience that the reading I did in childhood and adolescence still has an impact on me today.”

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the many readers whose lives have been enriched by his writing. David Malouf leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to make a significant impact on Australian literature and culture.
