I am absolutely terrified of losing a job I absolutely hate”. So begins Elliot Perlman’s latest novel, Maybe the Horse Will Talk, an excoriating examination of the dehumanising impact of corporate culture. Elliot’s unerring capacity to capture the zeitgeist saw his first two novels – Three Dollars and Seven Types of Ambiguity – adapted for the screen. Maybe the Horse Will Talk is another novel for the times, a mordant contemporary parable about sexual harassment and surviving the modern world.
