Finalist selection underway for the 2018 John Fries Award

March 26, 2018

More than 550 Australian and New Zealand artists entered this year’s John Fries Award, for which the finalists will be announced in early April.

Guest Curator and Judge, Consuelo Cavaniglia, says: “This year we have an outstanding selection of applications to assess and we are dedicated to identifying a group of talented artists to encourage and develop over the next six months.”

Ms Cavaniglia will work with Copyright Agency’s Visual Artist Manager, Tristan Chant, and fellow judges Sophia Kouyoumdjian, Dr Mikala Tai, Shannon Te Ao, and Kath Fries to narrow down artists to just 12.

“Based on the quality of applications we’ve seen so far, we can expect to see an exciting cross-section of contemporary artworks showcased in this year’s exhibition,” Ms Cavaniglia says.

Each of the finalists will receive a $1,000 artist fee, and will complete or create new work for the John Fries Award 2018 finalists’ exhibition at UNSW Galleries from 29 September to 3 November.

The winner of the $10,000 award will be announced on the exhibition’s opening night on 29 September.

The prize money is generously donated every year by the Fries family in memory of Viscopy* director and honorary treasurer, the late John Fries.

The award winner will be announced at UNSW Galleries on 29 September.

EXHIBITION DETAILS: The 2017 John Fries Award is exhibited from 29 September to 3 November at the UNSW Galleries, located within the UNSW Art & Design campus in Paddington. The exhibition is free-of-charge and open to the public.
