US publishers rebut tech companies’ AI claims

December 21, 2023

On 6 December, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) filed comments with the US Copyright Office, rebutting claims made by artificial intelligence (AI) tech companies.

AAP’s points include:

  • these companies:
    • have not sought to work with copyright owners, but have instead appropriated their intellectual property for commercial gain
    • are not struggling startups but some of the largest and most profitable technology companies in the world
    • do not warrant special assistance from the government
  • governments should not repeat the policy mistakes that have led to technology companies having a level of market dominance that has been difficult to curb
  • transparency is not only in the general public interest, but would facilitate innovation
