John Olsen: Goya’s Dog Exhibition

John Olsen is one of Australia’s greatest living artists. Known for vibrant and poetic depictions of the Australian landscape, he is exhibiting three never-before-seen journals as part of a major multimedia exhibition, John Olsen: Goya’s Dog at National Art School (NAS) Gallery from 11 June till 7 August 2021.
John Olsen: Goya’s Dog features over 50 major works, sketchbooks and drawings, many not seen in public for generations. Spanning eight decades, from the 1950s when Olsen first visited Spain to the present, this exhibition tracks the influences of these Spanish encounters on the artist’s sensibility, his palette, and how he views the landscape and the human condition.
The Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund is thrilled to be supporting NAS to digitise these journals for display in the exhibition using animation and motion-sensing cameras, and allowing greater access to gallery visitors, students, academics and the general public for the first time.
NAS worked with award-winning companies to develop a touchless, interactive display that allows gallery visitors to interact with Olsen’s life-size journals and explore a large projected ‘flipbook’ using motion-sensing cameras. Visitors can ‘turn the pages’ of Olsen’s journals, enlarge his drawings, view animations of the sketches, and seek further information about his practice –– all by using hand gestures instead of touch.
