National Poetry Month Gala

August is Poetry Month and what better way to celebrate contemporary Australian poets and their craft than with Red Room Poetry’s inaugural National Poetry Month Gala!

Supported by the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, the Gala showcases a rich feast of contemporary poets such as Eunice Andrada, Kirli Saunders, Jacqui Malins and Scott-Patrick Mitchell, alongside the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Poetry winners Sarah Holland-Batt and Omar Sakr, plus the host of ABC’s The Art Show Daniel Browning.

Alex Lee will host the Gala, which also features comedians and actors like Nat’s What I Reckon, Sacha Horler and Nina Oyama reading their favourite Australian poems. There will also be a special musical performance by Ben Salter.

Poetry Month (1 – 31 August), launched in 2021 by Red Room Poetry to celebrate Australian poetry, poets and publishers, aims to increase access, awareness and visibility of poetry in all its forms and for all audiences. This year, Poetry Month features a blazing line-up of poetic celebrations, events and showcases in every state and territory as well as a host of ways to get involved. From daily poems and writing prompts to online workshops, prizes and residencies, there’s a poem to fit everyone – from seasoned poetry lovers to the unversed.
