Create Grants are intended to support authors at a key time in their career to write their second book.
These grants cannot be used towards the costs of editing, production, publication or marketing.
Once your application has been submitted, no changes can be made, regardless of whether it is submitted before the round closes.
Who can apply
- Authors with ONLY ONE full-length work of their own creative writing/illustrations (including plays) professionally published/performed in Australia by the application closing date.
- Authors must have secured either a publishing contract for the work or a letter of interest or intent to publish/present from an Australian-based publisher or theatre company. This must be submitted with the application.
Who can’t apply
The following authors are not eligible to apply for Create Grants. Authors who have:
- self-published their books
- co-authored their first book
- written and published short films/film scripts
- written work primarily for the scholarly or academic market
- not had a full-length work published/presented (work published in anthologies, literary journals, newsletters, stories/chapters/essays in published books, edited collections and work presented by community theatres do not count towards eligibility requirements)
Support material for creative writers
Please submit with your application the following:
- A one-page CV outlining your Australian publication/performance history

- A sample of your writing/illustrations (up to 10 pages) from your proposed project/new work.
- For equity purposes with other applicants your sample should not exceed 10 pages
- A publishing contract for the work or a letter of interest or intent to publish your work from an Australian-based publisher, or contract or letter of interest from an Australian artistic director if writing a playscript.
