ABOUT Create Grants

The Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund offers grants to Australian creative writers and visual artists to create new work.

Create Grants provide a living allowance for writers and visual artists at key stages of their career.

Creative writers can apply to write their second book in the following literary genres: fiction, poetry, children’s literature, young adult literature, picture book illustration, graphic novels, playwriting, literary non-fiction and writing for performance (plays only).

Visual artists with no more than three solo exhibitions can apply to create a new work for exhibition.

Amount of grant: $20,000

Please note, there are new eligibility requirements for 2024.

WHO CAN APPLY

  • Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents
  • Applicants must have acquitted any overdue Cultural Fund grants

Projects should start after 1 August 2024

Up to four grants will be awarded in 2024.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time via the SmartyGrants online system
  • Applicants may submit only one application per round
  • Late applications will not be accepted
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed

YOUR APPLICATION

Your application will be assessed for its literary and artistic merit. This includes:

  • A project description
  • Details of your publication, performance, or exhibition history
  • Samples of your work
  • An agreement or letter of interest/intent to publish, present or exhibit your work

Please note: CVs are not required.

ASSESSMENT

  • Applications are assessed by a panel of independent peers from the writing, publishing, and visual arts sectors with broad experience
  • Peers will assess all applications for their literary or artistic merit

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND GRANT OBLIGATIONS 

  • Successful applicants must submit an acquittal report on their funded activities within eight weeks of the completion of the project via the SmartyGrants online system.
  • This report should include a description of the funded activities and detail the success or otherwise of the activity.
